Reading is one of the language skills which is ideally taught in schools within 3 stages: pre-, during, and post-reading activities. Pre-reading activities are the activities that are done before the reading process. However, not all teachers use pre-reading activities in their reading class. This study are focused on whether there is different achievement of reading comprehension between students who are taught by using pre-reading activities and students who are not.
The data are obtained through pre-test and post-test. The population is 256 students of SMAN 2 Banjarmasin, and 56 students are chosen randomly as the sample. Analysis of the data is done manually by using Statistical Product Service Solution (SPSS) of computer. Manual technique is done to find out the true and false answers of the students, while SPSS technique is used to see the validity and reliability of test items.
Based on the calculation of the test result, experimental class got pre-test score 68.57 and post-test score 85.28 whereas control class got pre-test score 72 and post-test score 78.43. The result of post-test in experimental class increases 16.71 whereas in control class increases 6.43 points. From the testing of analysis of the comparative hypothesis using t-test statistic technique, t-test value is 5.22, and t-table value is 2.3056. It showed that t-test > t-table, null hypothesis is rejected. It means that there is a significant difference in students’ achievement between students who are taught using pre-reading activities and those who are taught without using pre-reading activities.
From the result of research, it is suggested to English teachers to use pre-reading activities and various media as motivating strategy in teaching reading. Other researchers are also suggested to conduct further studies in this field by enlarging the scope and the subjects of the research.
